Hi and Welcome to Aussome Aussie Kennels! Here's a little History behind the Standard and Miniature Australian Shepherds. The Australian Shepherd is actually an American dog that was developed on ranches in Western United States. Their names came from the Australian Sheep that came with the sheepdogs over sea's. For years stockmen used Australian Shepherd because of their verstility and trainability. Aussie's are known for their eagerness to please and they excel at dog sports such as agility, frisbee, and flyball. Aussie's also make great guide, service and therapy dogs. Aussie's were used as rodeo trick dogs and considered sacred by the native americans who called them "ghost eye". The breeding of Miniature Australian Shepherds originated in 1968, in California. It started with 2 small stud dogs of the standard Australian Shepherds. The aim was to downsize the standard Australian Shepherd lines. The smaller Dogs were to be under 18" tall and have the same instincts of the larger dog, but small enough to travel easily and be a better size house dog.
